Flu Fighting Green Smoothie

This year’s flu season is in full swing and despite all of my efforts, my family is down for the count. I tried, I really did, to avoid getting sick–no visitors, didn’t go anywhere, basically holed up in the house for the last two months–but alas! We have all the symptoms.

As a mom of a 7 week old and a 3 year old, I really can’t afford to be sick. And I definitely don’t have time to recover the recommended way. You know, by sleeping. So, to try to get through this as quickly as possible, I have started drinking my favorite green smoothie. While I’ve called it the “Flu Fighter” here, it also goes by “Anti-inflammation Assistant” or “Weightloss Warrior.”

I’m not going to lie to you. It tastes pretty awful. I mean, it tastes exactly like how you would imagine a smoothie made from mostly vegetables would taste. Kind of like a liquid salad. Sweetened with dates. But, once you start drinking these suckers, you wont care about the taste because you’ll feel incredible.

Let’s talk for a minute about the ingredients. I am a firm believer in the medicinal properties of the foods I eat. While each of these ingredients individually are nutritional powerhouses, I’m going to highlight some of the major benefits, especially as they apply to fighting off a flu or cold.

Vitamin C is well known for its cold fighting abilities and this smoothie has it in spades. In fact, with the combination of an entire lemon (yes, a whole lemon) as well as two large handfuls of leafy greens, the addition of a green onion and parsley, there is an alphabet’s worth of vitamins and minerals in this baby.

For sinus clearing, I add about a tablespoon of fresh horseradish. Not only does the zing of horseradish loosen up packed sinuses, it provides a hefty dose of essential minerals like potassium and calcium. The avocado adds protein and creaminess, plus it has about a zillion health benefits–even anti-nausea properties!

Garlic, ginger, and turmeric are all touted as flu fighting miracle workers, so throw a little of each in there to blend up. I recommend about an inch of fresh ginger, a clove of garlic, and about a tablespoon of fresh turmeric root.

Honestly, once you see the full recipe, that part of you that cares about your health and wellness is going to tell your taste buds to move over because there are more important things to worry about. And hey, you’ll get used to the taste. You may even like it. I know I do!

Flu Fighting Green Smoothie

2 large handfuls of leafy greens

1 small lemon, peeled

1 green onion

1 small handful of parsley

1 whole avocado

1 inch of fresh ginger ginger

1 inch of fresh turmeric root

1 inch of fresh horseradish root

1 clove garlic

2 medjool dates, pitted

8 oz water


Put all ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth. Enjoy.

Note: Using less water will make for a thicker, more soup like consistency. For a thinner smoothie, add more water. 2018-02-10 08-13596850059145591374..jpg
